CONTEXT

Physical packaging is a set of package designs for digital products whicha are not given physicality. Each package was digitally designed with a custom type face made using the very pixels that work to create their digital displays. An animation is paired with the piece to bring the digital design elements to life, emodying the emotions felt through music, direction, and dating.

This project was part of an art installation that explored the value placed on physical and digital purchases, and the currency of money versus private information, would you rather “download” it for $1 or agree to the terms and conditions for $0.

PROCESS

The type faces below were for Sportify, Maps, and Hinge.

Spotify is an abstract and spattered type face in light of the artistic and sometimes sporatic nature of music. The letters are arranged in this rotating nature reminiscent of the floaty, almost transcendental feeling brought on my music.

Maps is a set of perpendicular lines denotiong the clarity of maps, but their arrangement in the multidirectional arrow recall the ambiguity and at times confusion in reading a map.

Hinge is a dissolving type face indicative of the fleeting nature of love. The letters are arranged as boxes and the animation shows them bounce around a screen like the dvd logo. And as kids we waited for the DVD logo we waited for it to perfectly align with the corner, similar to how we now wait for the date that aligns with our futures.

RESULTS

The packaging, animation, and overall exhibit were a success! They were well received by those visiting and evoked thoughtful conversation. I am super satisfied with the addition of the animation to accompany the packaging as I feel it brings them to life and ties the physical to the digital.

LEARNINGS
  • I enjoy graphic design

  • An exhibition can evoke thoughtful discussion when present, how do we ensure it happens when absent

  • Package design is an art, but often subdued by commercial needs
